SchoolYoga Institute has started working with Kiva to provide micro-loans to support people in the locations where we visit for Yoga Teacher Training Courses. This is just one of the ways that we can give back to the beautiful people in the countries we visit. We have started a Kiva Team, and encourage you, as part of the SchoolYoga Family, to brows the Kiva site and contribute to some projects that look good to you. Together, we can make the world a better place for everyone to live.

About Kiva

Kiva is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world. Learn more about how it works.

Why Kiva does what they do

Kiva envisions a world where all people – even in the most remote areas of the globe – hold the power to create opportunity for themselves and others.

Kiva believes providing safe, affordable access to capital to those in need helps people create better lives for themselves and their families.

How Kiva does it

Making a loan on Kiva is so simple that you may not realize how much work goes on behind the scenes.

Kiva works with microfinance institutions on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems. One hundred percent of your loan is sent to these microfinance institutions, which we call Field Partners, who administer the loans in the field.

Kiva relies on a world wide network of over 450 volunteers who work with our Field Partners, edit and translate borrower stories, and ensure the smooth operation of countless other Kiva programs.

How Kiva is funded

100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes directly towards funding loans; Kiva does not take a cut. Furthermore, Kiva does not charge interest to our Field Partners, who administer the loans.

Kiva is primarily funded through the support of lenders making optional donations. They also raise funds through grants, corporate sponsors, and foundations.

FREE TTC – April 1st, 2012, 15 individuals of varying ages, gender, interests, backgrounds, and places from around the world will gather together at the Mystical Yoga Farm to embark on the transformative journey to Self through movement and breathe.

The Souls chosen for this amazing opportunity were encouraged to submit videos and essays outlining why they ought to be selected, sharing a part of their yoga journey and personal story, along with one’s intention of how they could be of service to their community if chosen to participate in this incredible program and receive certification as a yoga instructor. This was also the information that allowed SYI to make the tough choice of selecting participants.

It is January, 2012. The year of manifestation, growth and expansion. Expansion of the individual self and the collective.
The conscious collective.
As each individual begins, or continues on their own conscious path of development at the start of this new year a common question arises: How can one plant and foster positive seeds of growth and awareness?

The Yoga Sutra’s outline for us a philosophy of how to answer this question. To begin we understand that each action we take has a karmic outcome. In every action taken, we have an expected re-action that occurs. These actions and expected re-actions are, for the majority of us, created it the egoic mind. The egoic mind is that which we mistakenly see as the self. Through the process of meditation the mind becomes still. It is in this stillness that we are able to see more clearly the distinction between the egoic mind and the stillness. We then come to know this stillness as the Self. As we continue in this state of stillness, or that which becomes known as the self, we see that the presence of the egoic mind decreases. As the presence of the egoic mind decreases the decisions we make from this egoic state naturally decreases as well. We are then able to move more in and from the state of stillness, or self. This then is the state in which no karma is created. This is the state in which we ought to strive to plant and foster seeds of growth and awareness in 2012. The state of stillness that is achieved through meditation.

So set the time, create your space, find the stillness that is the truest essence of self. Then from from that heart-centered stillness, plant your seeds, and watch the expansion of your own awareness grow throughout 2012. It is here that you dream your world into being.

December was off to a great start with Bryan Russell arriving at the farm in the first few days of the month to meet with Mike Knights of Atitlan Info Hub to purchase the farm’s very own boat! After the deal was done, Bryan jetted over to San Marcos to pick up Randi Schiffman and friends and stopped at San Pedro to gas up before making their way to the boat’s new home at the dock of the Mystical Yoga Farm. Such an exciting adventure and fabulous investment for the farm family and future guests of the farm. With so many visitors coming each month the boat makes it a little easier for farm guests to have direct transportation to the farm. We will, however, remain conscious of the fact that our farm supports the local economy and we will continue supporting our local boat drivers with the opportunity to be a part of community by counting on them to still assist us with boat transportation. It seems to me that the boat drivers are quite impressed with our purchasing a boat and their smiles of approval perhaps encourage the fact that we a becoming a part of “Their” community. It is a warm feeling of community development as we can find the things in life that unite us as one.

It was an amazing time to be at the farm as we transitioned from 2011 to 2012. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this spiritually significant time, coming into the end of an astrological cycle, or a better place to celebrate it than at the Mystical Yoga Farm.
December brought to the farm ten beautiful souls that cycled through the four directions of the medicine wheel under the loving guidance of Vedantin and Ananda, each one contributing unique aspects of Self and sharing a piece of their own Soul’s journey.
The 500-hour Teacher Training came to an end on New Years Eve and many celebrated the end of this journey at Las Piramides annual meditation to bring in the New Year. Profound moments of reflection and feelings of gratitude were present in this magical place and a powerful energy was called in as intentions for the upcoming year were set.

The first week of January 2012 was spent with Vedantin, Bryan, Randi and Ananda sharing their valuable experience with enthusiastic facilitators in-training at the School Yoga Institute’s latest program for training new facilitators. Love and beauty was shared amongst us all and 4 new souls were welcomed into the SYI family, each one contributing excitement for the up-coming year. We are and continue to be filled with wonder and gratitude at the magic of the universal oneness that we all experienced. peace-Anjili

SchoolYoga Institute Partners with JUSTA: Justice and Unity in Sustainable Trade for Artisans.

SchoolYoga Institute, together with local non-profit JUSTA, are joining to develop a health and nutrition course for local indigenous women and mothers around Lake Atitlan. The course, Comida Vida Tradicional, has the mission to promote health education and nutrition for women, children, and families by offering workshops on physical, mental and emotional nourishment, and to provide natural, sustainable, and accessible alternatives to unhealthy and processed foods that have replaced local and traditional foods in the daily diet of indigenous families in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.

The course is a five class series, each class focusing on a different topic. Each class provides information, discussion time, and a cooking class of healthy and locally-found economic meals that can be prepared in the home. The first class highlights the nutrition of fruits and vegetables, provides natural alternatives to processed white sugar, and discusses the importance of reading the label when purchasing packaged foods and drinks. The second class focuses on medicinal herbs, nutritious spices, and discusses a holistic approach to medical care. The third class incorporates nuts, seeds, and sprouting, as well as opens a space for discussion on reproductive and women´s health. The fourth class deals with grains, legumes, and the tortilla. The final class discusses meat, animal products, and fermentation. At the end of the course, each woman will have her own Comida Vida Tradicional manuel including all the notes, information, and recipes.

Why have we chosen this initiative as a way to give back to our community? Because Guatemala has the fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world, yet the land provides enough vegetables and fruits to nourish its population. From the lack of health education and the inundation of processed, packaged and sugary/greasy junk food from the Western World, local families are filling their bellies with foods that are not fulfilling their nourishment. Over 70% of indigenous children are chronically malnourished, resulting in slowed childhood development, diabetes, and a myriad of other health problems through adulthood. Educating today´s women and mothers on nourishment, healthy eating, and women´s and children´s health will ultimately enhance nutrition for generations to come.

Vedantin Ping Luo, Founder and Director of School Yoga Institute, Ed. D, E-RYT, Herbalist, Reiki/Shamanic Mythic, certified Vinyasa Ashtanga yoga teacher by BNS Iyengar and Sivananda certified yoga teacher.

Vedantin wears many hats in his dharmic life. In addition to being an experienced yoga teacher, who has been teaching yoga and training yoga teachers around the world for many, many years, he is also a certified integrative herbalist by School of Integrative Herbology, a master practitioner of Shamanic Reiki energy healing, and a university professor who teaches holistic health. Vedantin has studied extensively with a myriad of gurus from many traditions, including BNS Iyengar, Sri Patabhi Jois, Tim Miller, Berle Bender Birch, and David Swenson. Through years of experience, he has found that a true guru resides right in his heart.

Vedantin has also been studying Shamanic Healing for a long period of time and was fortunate enough to study Ancient medicine intensively with medicine men and women in the high Andes and the Amazon jungle in Peru and Bolivia. He has been blessed and initiated as an earth keeper and medicine shaman by the medicine elders and he continues to embark on the journey of healing as a medicine keeper of the earth.

Vedantin has been taking his journey and pilgrimage externally and internally into the synthesis of many mystical, healing, and yogic paths such as classic yogic, tantric yoga, Patanjili’s eight limb yoga, devotional yoga (Bakti Yoga), action yoga (Karma Yoga), and Yogic Living in Theory and Practice (Juana Yoga), and shamanic healing yoga. There are many paths but the essence of all the paths is One: to realize the SELF and to find a state of contentment, happiness, and bliss.

Born and raised in a Buddhist community, the sacred Emei Mountain, in China near Tibet, Vedantin learned Buddhist principles at an early age and integrated them into his lifestyle. Additionally meditation, Tai Chi, Chiqong, and Chinese Martial arts were of his upbringing. He began teaching these principles to others 20 years ago. When Vedantin was first introduced to Yoga, he found it incorporated all aspects of Buddhist principles. Practicing Yoga has been instrumental in his life realization. Vedantin believes that the state of love, life contentment, joy, peace, and bliss cannot be found in the ever changing world but can be found in inner stillness, the true Self. He shares yoga with others with his heart and his love of Yoga.

Vedantin integrates his pedagogical knowledge of modern techniques of teacher training with his knowledge of mythical teaching of Yoga, thereby blending “science” with the art of connecting and sharing. He integrates shamanic healing medicine into his daily self-healing practice and yoga teaching. He primarily practices and teaches Sadhana Vinyasa Yoga (Vinyasa Ashtanga based), Sadhana Hatha Yoga (Sivananda based), and Shamanic Healing Yoga (blending healing power of indigenous medicine wheel with joy of Yoga).

Vedantin is inspired to respond to his inner calling, to share the wisdom and power of Yoga and healing arts with others. He envisions the conception of the University of Healing Arts in the very near future to serve humanity and bridge the gap between “science” and “ancient tradition”. His dedication and love for Yoga and Healing Arts would benefit those who are pursuing stillness of mind and body and happiness and contentment in life.

Bryan Russell, Assistant Director, MBA, RYT-500, Yoga Siromani, Sivananda and SchoolYoga Certified, Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga Teacher.

Bryan has been teaching yoga classes in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire since 2005 and is also a facilitator for SchoolYoga Institute Yoga Teacher Training Courses in Keene and around the world. Bryan is an active member in the local yoga community and has been involved with projects like YogaDay Keene, KeeneOnYoga.com. Bryan’s classes vary in style and ability and he enjoys having fun and being creative while still maintaining a disciplined approach to the yoga practice.

Bryan completed his 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at the Sivananda Ashram in Val-Morin, Canada in 2005. In 2007, he received his 500-hour certification through SchoolYoga Institute, where he studied Sadhana Hatha Flow and Sadhana Vinyasa Flow with Vedantin.

Bryan has been working with SchoolYoga Institute for the past four years. He teaches Sadhana Hatha and Vinyasa Flows and leads Yoga Teacher Trainings worldwide. Bryan has also worked as an outdoor guide for Raw Shakti Yoga, a yoga retreat and adventure company, since their beginnings in 2004 (visit www.rawshakti.com). He is passionate about the outdoor places he shares with groups. If he isn’t traveling, Bryan teaches yoga in New Hampshire. An avid hiker, he likes to climb his favorite mountain, Monadnock, at least once a week when he’s home.

In 2008, Bryan started Blooming Mountain to offer yoga to business people in corporate settings. He sees so many people burdened by stress and developing unhealthy habits at work. Although workplace stress is often accepted as normal, Bryan believes it doesn’t need to be this way and that yoga has a tremendous amount of wisdom and health benefits to offer business employees.

Amanda loves sharing the joy and light of her heart through yoga. She lives to dig her hands in the dirt and share yoga, music and laughter with like minded people around the world. Growing up in rural New Hampshire she spent her childhood exploring her Mothers garden and the surrounding forests; now she feels at home on our 8 acre yoga farm gracing the shores of the mystic Lake Atitlan. After taking her first training with SchoolYoga Institute in 2009 Amanda quickly became an integral part of the SYI family, and along with SchoolYoga Institute’s Director Vedantin Luo, Amanda has been the creative force behind this magical paradise. When not on the farm Amanda teaches yoga classes at local studios in her home town of Keene, NH or at different sites around the globe with SYI.

Amanda first discovered yoga in 1999 as a theater student. In 2003 she founded the Johnson State College Yoga Club, which connected students to local yoga studios and teachers, creating a loving yoga community in the mountains of northern Vermont. As an outdoor educator Amanda has been sharing yoga with youth at summer camps and on wilderness trips for 8 years.

In early 2009 Amanda completed her 200 hour training with the SchoolYoga institute in her home community of Keene, NH. In 2010 she completed her 500 hours in Guatemala, and 800 hours in Nicaragua, becoming part of the SYI family. Being an avid gardener and backpacker she delved deep into the Earth Medicine practices of SchoolYoga and is one of the foundational spirits in the creation of our Mystical Yoga Farm connecting spirit with the natural healing of Gaia.

Praise for Amanda

“I recently graduated from the class in El Chalten. This was not my first visit to Patagonia’s, but my first to Mt Fitz Roy, so thank you for introducing me to yet another surreal part of this powerful and majestic mountains range. Amanda was an absolute pleasure to be around, and the BEST teacher I have yet to encounter. She is a living example of what YOGA allows one to become a part of- BLISS, JOY, in touch with the universal oneness. Words cannot describe the transformation that took place within my being, so I wanted to reach out to you, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and let you know that you are doing the world a TRUE service. Amanda is so cool, and so blissed out, and such a good teacher-WOW!”

We invite you to join us under the light of the full moon surrounded by the otherworldly Mayan jungle and volcanic landscape of Lago de Atitlán in the highlands of Guatemala. Together we will practice and learn to share the art and wisdom of yoga that would heal ourselves and the planet. Through practicing and contemplating Yoga sutra principles as taught by the sage Patañjali 2000 years ago we strive to arrive at the fully realized state of luminous bliss. This training has an emphasis on cultivating awareness and healing through a fusion of spirituality, mystical healing arts, and philosophical inquiry.

We will be exploring and embracing the fullness of complimentary spiritual healing traditions, incorporating lectures and practicum in Ayurveda, the Vedic science of life and healing, Mayan cosmology and astrology, Reiki, Thai Massage, and daily ceremonies which will include ceremonies and a nightly satsang with kirtan, ecstatic dance, Balinese kechak, mantra japa chanting, and meditation.

We will learn about healing our planet by living in harmony and balance with nature at the Mystical Yoga Farm where we will learn to grow organic food through mystical, theoretical, and hands on exploration of permaculture, biodynamic, and ecological agricultural techniques including soil fertility regeneration through composting and mulching, rainwater harvesting, plant propagation, and more.

Food at the Mystical Yoga Farm is vegetarian (and mostly vegan) served twice daily (breakfast and dinner with a midday snack) and as often as possible is harvested from our organically cultivated volcanic soil as well as wild foraged from the surrounding jungle. We also prepare and serve typical Guatemalan food drawing on the traditions of the food prepared by the local Tz´utujil and Kaq´chikel peoples.
