My experience as a Guatemala Yoga Teacher Training Student

How do I begin to sum 21 days of a program that is so much more than simply learning how to teach yoga? The School Yoga Institute 200HR Yoga Teacher Training first came to me in November of 2019 – a friend through Instagram told me about her experience with SYI in Peru and I immediately knew that this was something I needed in my life. A lifelong mover and spiritual seeker, I not only wanted to deepen my yogic studies but also my own spiritual practices. I desired a program that allowed me to dive deep into my relationship with myself, my beliefs, and how I viewed the world. I craved a teacher training rooted in yoga but flavored with spirituality, mysticism, and self-inquiry; School Yoga Institute gave me just that.

From the moment I first inquired about the training in Guatemala, I felt welcomed into the SYI family. Any questions I had were met lovingly with thoughtful answers and every step leading to the long journey to Guatemala confirmed my decision to invest in this training. While I had hesitations in stepping towards this unknown, I was constantly guided by a deep trust and alignment with the values of SYI.

The 21 days of the training cycled through the 4 cycles of the Peruvian medicine wheel, Serpent, Jaguar, Hummingbird, and Eagle – these cycles represent cycles of life and the ebbs and flows of energy that are inevitable throughout the training. Each cycle allowed me to go deeper into myself, my studies, and be supported in the material we were learning.

To anyone considering this training, I’ll warn you, it’s not going to be a retreat where you have hours of free time and can relax all day in the sun – it consists of early mornings, long hours, deep introspection, and a bit of homework. Don’t let that scare you. This training also consists of deep soul connections, coming in tune to the nature around you, a deeper appreciation of life, the wisdom from ancient, indigenous practices, and tools that you will be able to use to support you for the rest of your life.

One of the reasons I chose Guatemala for the yoga teacher training was because of my call to the Mystical Yoga Farm. This quirky, meowgical permaculture farm tucked away between volcanoes on the coast of Lake Atitlan has a special energy that attracts the most amazing souls. I had three delicious vegan meals a day, spent time with the farm’s Karma Yogis, spent free time lounging in hammocks or sitting by the dock, and felt so held and supported by the staff of the farm. The compost toilets aren’t that bad and I was surprised to see how much better I could focus when I was living off the grid. Being at MYF added another layer to my experience throughout the training, the support of the community held me throughout the process and guided me to go deeper. Just as I felt welcomed into the SYI family, I now hold a place in my heart for the family I made at the Mystical Yoga Farm.

My intention for the SYI Yoga Teacher training was to connect more deeply to myself and deepen my spiritual practices but I came out with so much more. I feel confident in my ability to teach yoga, I feel my own yoga practice now has a strong unshakable foundation, I have made lifelong friendships, and I feel I have added so many skills, lessons, and practices to my toolbox that I will refer to for the rest of my life. This program has added to my life in so many ways. I feel so grateful for School Yoga Institute for creating this beautiful container.

It is difficult to think of words to encompass the past three weeks but I will leave you with a reminder to listen to the subtle nudges of spirit guiding you in a new direction. The path forward may be unclear but trust that you know where you are meant to go. Trust in the timing and trust that whatever is meant for you, won’t miss you. Om Tat Sat.
