Shadia Heenan Nilforoush- 500-HR International Yoga Teacher

 

 

Shadia desires to create safe and supportive space for others to experience mind-body-heart connection; employing mindfulness based practices including yoga, breath work, ceremony, and meditation. Her teaching style is focused primarily on hatha, vinyasa, and restorative yin, approaching yoga as prayer in motion. Shadia offers guidance from a space of trauma awareness, encouraging agency, providing modifications, and consent only hands-on assists if/when necessary.

 

In 2019, she completed a 20-hour training for trauma sensitive yoga with the Trauma Center’s Trauma Sensitive Yoga program in Brookline, MA. In 2017, Shadia fulfilled her 300-HR yoga teacher training in Peru with the School of Yoga Institute. While in Peru, she studied shamanic traditions in holding ceremony, energy work, and plant medicine. In 2014, Shadia completed her 200-HR yoga teacher training in Bali, Indonesia with Yandara Institute of Yoga. She found yoga in 2003, in her hometown of Houston, TX. Since then she has explored various lineages, teaching styles, studios, continuing education, and workshops.

 

In addition, Shadia is a multidisciplinary artist working in video and performance to reconcile polarizing identities. Her work has been exhibited in shows including New York, Hartford, Boston, and New Orleans. She received her BFA, with a minor in Psychology, from the Hite Art Institute at the University of Louisville. Currently, she is a Master of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Connecticut.

 

What’s your favorite yoga pose and why?

My favorite yoga pose is almost always Vriksasana, tree pose. There is something liberating about the idea of being rooted and free flowing at the same time. However, I oscillate between this aspect of Vriksasana and the supportive heart opening of a slightly elevated, Supta Baddha Konasana, reclined bound angle pose. When I support my body in this expression, it is like a gift each time, to encourage and invite my body into softness.

 

What is your favorite quote?

What inspires you in your practice?

My practice is always inspired by the idea of returning home, to that inner dwelling where I can connect with and hangout with God.
