OUR Student TestimonialS

Check out our student experience stories to see what makes us unique and how our community continues to grow after 18+ years of creating Yoga Teacher Trainings worldwide!

I first heard of SYI after being on a self-led retreat in Guatemala last year alongside an SYI YTT program going on at Mystical Yoga Farm. I heard nothing but incredible things from the participants and they were so gracious to let me participate in a few of their activities. I was super drawn to the shamanic aspect of the training. Seeing the community formed and hearing over and over again it was so much more than teacher training with some even describing it as group therapy, I became curious.

I’ll be honest-I initially had resisted the idea of Latin America in the rainy season and was really excited about going to Peru. Sadly, the timing didn’t work out with SYI’s training there so I had chosen to go with another school. Long story short, it fell through two weeks beforehand.

Panicked, Keri was my first call and she told me there was still space to go to Nicaragua and could help with a generous scholarship. From our first call, she was very responsive, attentive to my needs, and truly made it possible. At first I was resistant with Nicaragua not being on my list of places to go, but in retrospect, it was a perfect example of sometimes you can’t plan life because it has something better for you in store! Nicaragua is such a hidden gem and the place and people were so beautiful!

While I don’t plan on teaching yoga as a primary source of income, the training fostered a safe place to heal, feel, process, and merely be amongst wonderful people and a beautiful environment. More hummingbirds, lizards, frogs, and butterflies than I’ve ever seen! I feel like I relearned almost every pose with new alignment and the teachers were SO knowledgeable and truly were there for us.

I hope to use my certification to teach unique classes that will further my own healing by offering classes that acknowledge those challenges and invite others who too may be in the process of healing to do just that. I also hope to start a women’s circle and collaborate with different types of healing (sound, journaling, nature, etc.)

Although the entire training was impactful, two moments especially stood out. One was doing an all-women temezcal (ceremonial sweat lodge) shedding what no longer served us.

The other most memorable part of the training was the holotropic breathwork we did. I had done breathwork in the past, but had a far more intense and visceral experience these times and for the first time in my life had permission to merely feel without rationalizing, justifying, defending, or fear of judgement or coaxing me. For someone who has previously been much more in her mind, I have now committed to living from the heart and the importance of feeling! Feeling is healing.

Thank you, SYI for creating such a beautiful container to heal, grow, and reflect: far better than the one I had initially planned!
