WHAT MAKES OUR SCHOOL UNIQUE
What a potent time in the world to feel the call to become a yoga teacher! The journey begins right here and right now – searching the internet for a unique experience that sparks your destiny’s curiosity. You are here for a reason. We offer experiences that gift students with so much more than just a certification.
Click on each of the tabs to learn more about what makes our Yoga Teacher Training Programs unique.
Our school is deeply influenced by Peruvian Medicine Wheel. This is a significant reason why many say that SYI is much more than just a yoga teacher training. We provide students with a spiritually driven course that goes far beyond Asana (the physical postures of yoga). Through The Peruvian medicine wheel and ceremonies, we connect to the shadows of our past to understand how our patterns shape and feed our current state and perspective. We develop powerful inner tools and rewrite the personal narratives that keep us stuck, giving way to a new perspective and lasting change in our lives.
School Yoga Institute started over 20 years ago and has contributed to hundreds of lives being transformed along the way! As a spiritually focused organization, we are built upon a foundation of love, radical self-acceptance, personal growth, and deep connection. Our Alumni family is vast and continues to blossom throughout the world. Once you complete an SYI course, you’re family for life! We feel honored to do this work and continue to be inspired by each student and the uniqueness of their story.
We recognize that yoga should be accessible to every body! Wherever there is inequality, there is work to do. We offer yoga scholarships for all our yoga teacher training programs and SYI is committed to amplifying and empowering the voices of people of color and folks who identify as BIPOC, LBGTQIA+, and members of marginalized communities.
As an organization, we are very selective about the sacred locations we choose to host our YTTs. We are grateful and humbled to hold these courses around the world on many different continents. We want the people who have grown up in these communities to have a chance to experience our programs at a discounted rate, so we offer 50% off for anyone who is from each location. For example, if you are from Central America, you have access to our programs in Guatemala and Costa Rica at a 50% tuition discount!
We truly can’t say enough about our incredible yoga facilitators. Like our course offerings, our facilitators are located all around the globe! Each one of our diverse world-class facilitators has completed 500-hour YTT and offers a plethora of experience and wisdom. We wouldn’t be who we are without them!
We love our team and we love what we do! If you have ever sent us an e-mail, requested a phone call, or reached out with questions, chances are you’ve heard back from our co-owner and operator, Keri Pennell!
Keri, and Co-Owner and facilitator Jed, pour their hearts and souls into this community and deeply care for each student’s journey and experiences. We call Keri our Mystical Mama! A vegan chef, wife, and mother of four, Keri’s leadership is contagious and welcoming! She’s joined by an incredibly supportive team of SYI visionaries!
At School Yoga Institute we are grateful to work with numerous international locations as passionate about sustainability as us. In our travels we make an effort to off-set emissions, during our yoga teacher training we provide students with the knowledge, means and opportunity to delve into self inquiry of the impact of their current lifestyle and an introduction to living more sustainably.
Is This Online Yoga Teacher Training Legitimate?
The growth of online trainings has made yoga education available to people who, for many reasons, might never have been able to attend a residential or in-person program. At the same time, it has raised reasonable questions around quality, credibility, and what “legitimate” actually means when learning takes place online. Not all programs operate with the same level of care, and legitimacy involves far more than access to recorded classes or downloadable materials.
A credible online ytt is shaped by how the curriculum is developed, who teaches it, and how students are supported over time. Programs with real educational substance integrate theory with practice, offer clear pedagogical frameworks, and encourage active engagement rather than passive consumption. In yoga education, quality shows up in understanding, integration, and readiness to teach — not in how quickly content can be completed.
This online yoga teacher training is organized as a guided learning process rather than a content archive. The curriculum follows a clear progression and draws on the experience of instructors who have spent years working in yoga education. Students move through the material at their own pace, while still having access to interaction, feedback, and reflective learning opportunities. This approach reflects the way yoga has traditionally been taught: through study, practice, inquiry, and ongoing guidance.
Rather than relying on bold claims or accelerated timelines, the emphasis here is on consistency, responsibility, and sustained engagement. The training is intended for students who see yoga education as a process and who are interested in building a long-term, grounded relationship with yoga — both in their personal practice and in their development as teachers.
Who This Online Yoga Teacher Training Is For
This training is well suited for students who are looking for a thoughtful and well-structured educational experience, rather than a quick or surface-level certification. It supports learners who value flexibility while still wanting clarity, depth, and integrity in their studies.
- Students seeking a self-paced online yoga teacher training with a clear structure and intentional progression
- Practitioners interested in exploring yoga beyond physical practice, including theory, philosophy, and self-inquiry
- Individuals balancing their studies with work, family responsibilities, or travel
- Students who appreciate guided learning, reflective study, and educational context
- Those who want to develop teaching skills gradually, with care and awareness
Online Yoga Teacher Training vs In-Person Programs
Choosing between an online and an in-person yoga teacher training often depends on learning style, lifestyle, and personal priorities. When developed with intention, both formats can offer meaningful and transformative educational experiences.
Online yoga teacher training offers flexibility and accessibility, allowing students to study at a pace that fits their lives. It creates space for repetition, reflection, and gradual integration of the material, without the constraints of location. Strong online programs place emphasis on curriculum design, coherence, and mentorship, rather than relying solely on physical presence.
In-person yoga teacher training programs provide immersive environments, immediate physical feedback, and intensive group dynamics. These experiences can be valuable, but they also require fixed schedules, travel, and extended time commitments that are not always realistic or accessible for every student.
This online yoga teacher training is designed to draw from the strengths of both approaches. By combining structured self-paced learning with opportunities for guidance, interaction, and community, it supports a steady and meaningful learning process over time — without attempting to replicate an in-person format.
