Jordyn | Costa Rica 200hr YTT Testimonial
I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training in Montezuma, Costa Rica. It was an experience that has changed my relationship with yoga and with myself. Going into the training, I knew I wanted something that would fully immerse me, not just in the physical practice, but in the philosophy, lifestyle, and deeper meaning of yoga. I wasn’t looking for a surface-level certification. I wanted an experience that would challenge me, ground me, and allow me to truly live yoga both on and off the mat. With SYI, that is exactly what I received.
From the moment I chose SYI, the decision felt right. There was an intuitive pull toward the program, a telling that I trusted even before fully understanding what the journey would entail. My original intention for completing teacher training was to deepen my personal practice. At the time, I wasn’t sure if teaching yoga would be part of my future or not. I simply knew I wanted to understand yoga more fully, its roots, its teachings, and its ability to connect mind, body, and spirit. I was really excited to learn the philosophy. I entered the training with an open heart and mibd and no expectations, allowing the experience to unfold naturally. I loved how shamanism was brought into the teachings. I enjoyed each ceremony the group completed.
Throughout the training, I was fully immersed in yoga in a way I had never experienced before. Each day was intentionally structured to balance physical practice, philosophy, self-reflection, and community connection. The environment in Montezuma itself added a special layer to the experience. Surrounded by nature, the ocean, and the peaceful energy of Costa Rica, it felt easier to slow down, tune inward, and truly be present. The setting supported the internal work we were doing and created space for growth, vulnerability, and transformation. Aves was an amazing place! The staff treated us so well.
One of the most impactful aspects of this training was the opportunity to explore teaching for the first time. Although I hadn’t initially planned on becoming a teacher, stepping into the role showed me a new side of yoga, connection, and sharing. Through guided practice teaching and supportive feedback, I began to feel more confident in my voice and presence. The training allowed me to move past self-doubt and trust myself, both as a practitioner and as a teacher. By the end of the program, I realized that I not only wanted to teach, but that I felt genuinely called to share my practice with others. The confidence I gained during this training was something I never expected, yet it became one of the greatest gifts of the experience.
Our two incredible teachers, Anita and Katie, played a huge role in shaping this journey. They cared deeply about each and every one of us, creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing learning environment. Their passion for yoga was clear in every lesson, and their dedication to teaching was inspiring. They took the time to thoroughly guide us through each aspect of the training, ensuring we understood not only the “how” but the “why” behind every practice and teaching. I felt truly seen and supported throughout the process, which made learning feel empowering rather than overwhelming.
I especially appreciated the thoughtful and constructive feedback they provided. Anita and Katie paid close attention to our alignment and form, helping us strengthen our physical practice while also encouraging self-awareness and mindfulness. Their feedback was always delivered with care, respect, and intention, making it easy to receive and apply. Because of their guidance, I gained a deeper understanding of my body and learned how to move with greater integrity, strength, and awareness. Their teaching style helped me grow not only as a student, but also as a future teacher. I learned it’s okay to not be “perfect” in each pose. Every body is different, and that’s beautiful.
Beyond the technical and physical aspects of yoga, this training was deeply transformative on a personal level. I have never had an experience quite like this before. The connections formed during the training were meaningful and genuine, and I feel incredibly grateful to have shared this journey with such an inspiring group of people. Being surrounded by individuals who were all on their own paths of growth created a sense of community and belonging that was truly special. I hope to reconnect with many of them again one day, as these relationships feel lasting and deeply rooted.
The training created many opportunities for deep discussion and reflection. We spent time diving into the Yoga Sutras, exploring yogic philosophy, and sharing our personal interpretations and experiences. These conversations allowed us to learn not only from the teachings, but from one another. Hearing different perspectives helped broaden my understanding of yoga and reinforced the idea that yoga is a deeply personal practice, shaped by individual experiences and beliefs. These discussions creatted connection, empathy, understanding, and mutual respect within the group.
Overall, the YTT experience with SYI has given me a much deeper respect for my yoga practice and a greater understanding of its power. I have an even deeper respect added to my yoga teachers, teaching is not easy. I learned firsthand how yoga extends far beyond physical movement, it is a tool for self-discovery, healing, and transformation. This training showed me just how powerful yoga can be for the mind, body, and spirit, and how it has the ability to create meaningful change both individually and collectively.
I am deeply grateful for this experience and for everything it has given me. The training not only strengthened my practice, but also reshaped my perspective and gave me the confidence to step into teaching with authenticity and purpose. Completing my 200-hour yoga teacher training with SYI in Montezuma, Costa Rica, is an experience I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
