Paul | Costa Rica 200hr YTT Testimonial
Two years ago, I came to yoga looking for a stronger mind-body connection. I never expected that a yoga teacher training in Costa Rica would become one of the most transformative experiences of my life, one that challenged me physically, emotionally, and spiritually while completely changing the way I see myself and connect with others.
When I committed to this training six months before the May 2026 immersion, I thought I was signing up to learn how to teach yoga. Like many people entering a teacher training program, I wanted to deepen my practice, improve my understanding of yoga, and step outside my comfort zone. What I didn’t realize was how much this experience would ask of me and how much it would ultimately give back in return.
From the moment I arrived in Costa Rica, there was a noticeable shift in energy. Being surrounded by nature and removed from the distractions of everyday life created space to slow down and become fully present. There was an immediate feeling that this experience was about much more than just learning postures or memorizing sequences. It felt like an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves in a deeper and more honest way.
One of the things that stood out to me most about this training was how intentionally it balanced physical practice, philosophy, self-reflection, and community. The days were long and often demanding. We moved through hours of asana, meditation, breathwork, lectures, group discussions, practice teaching, and personal reflection. There were definitely moments when I felt physically exhausted or mentally pushed beyond what felt comfortable. Looking back, though, those moments became some of the most important parts of the journey.
I think a lot of people come into yoga teacher training searching for something, even if they can’t fully explain what it is yet. Some people are looking for confidence. Some are searching for healing, purpose, direction, or connection. Others simply want to feel more grounded in themselves. What made this experience so meaningful was that it created space for all of that. It allowed people to show up exactly as they were while also encouraging growth in ways that felt genuine and lasting.
One of the biggest lessons I learned throughout this training is that yoga is not about perfection. It’s not about having the most advanced practice or getting every pose right. In fact, some of the most powerful moments came from vulnerability, from struggling, feeling uncomfortable, or realizing there was still so much to learn. This experience taught me that yoga is really about presence. It’s about staying open, aware, and connected to yourself even during moments of discomfort or uncertainty.
That lesson carried far beyond the mat for me. Before this training, I viewed yoga mostly through the lens of movement and physical practice. During the program, I began to understand yoga as a way of living and relating to others. I became more aware of my thoughts, my reactions, and the energy I bring into different situations. I learned how important mindfulness, patience, compassion, and intentional communication truly are, not only in teaching yoga, but in everyday life.
Another incredibly meaningful part of this experience was the sense of community that developed within our group. Walking into a training surrounded by strangers can feel intimidating at first, but that quickly disappeared. Over time, real connections formed through shared challenges, conversations, vulnerability, and support. There was a beautiful balance of masculine and feminine energy that created an environment where people felt safe enough to be authentic and open.
What made this community special was that nobody felt like they had to pretend to have everything figured out. People were honest about their struggles, fears, insecurities, and personal growth. There was something incredibly powerful about being surrounded by individuals who were all willing to step outside of their comfort zones together. We supported each other through difficult moments, celebrated each other’s progress, and created friendships that felt genuine and meaningful.
Some of the most impactful moments from the training didn’t happen during a perfect yoga pose or structured lecture. They happened in the in-between moments, conversations after class, sharing reflections after meditation, encouraging each other during practice teaching, or simply sitting together at the restaurant after a long day and realizing how connected everyone had become. Those moments reminded me that yoga is ultimately about connection, connection to yourself, to other people, and to the present moment.
I approached this experience with a deep sense of gratitude and openness. I wanted to fully show up for every practice, every lesson, every difficult moment, and every opportunity to grow. Looking back now, I can honestly say this experience exceeded every expectation I had.
I also have immense gratitude for our facilitators, Lex and Katherine, whose guidance and presence helped shape this journey in such a powerful way. They created an environment that felt welcoming, supportive, and challenging all at once. Their ability to lead with both knowledge and authenticity allowed everyone to feel seen, encouraged, and capable of growth. More than simply teaching yoga techniques, they helped create a space where real transformation could happen.
Completing this training gave me far more than a certification. It gave me confidence in myself, a deeper understanding of yoga, meaningful friendships, and a stronger sense of purpose moving forward. More than anything, it reminded me of the importance of fully committing to experiences that challenge you to grow.
I’m leaving this training with an incredible amount of gratitude for the people, the lessons, the practice, and the opportunity itself. I feel proud of myself for showing up completely, even during moments that felt uncomfortable or difficult. I also feel inspired to continue integrating what I learned here into every part of my life.
This experience reminded me that yoga goes far beyond the mat. It influences how we communicate, how we handle challenges, how we lead, how we support others, and how we move through the world each day. For me, this training was not simply the end of a program. It was the beginning of a much deeper journey, one that I know will continue shaping my life long after leaving Costa Rica.
