Jack | Guatemala 200hr YTT Testimonial
As we usher in the new year, it has been approximately ten days since I proudly received my yoga teacher diploma from the School Yoga Institute at their serene location in Guatemala. In these days following my intense training, I find myself reflecting deeply on the profound journey I have undertaken. Indeed, the past ten days have served as an invaluable test – a unique opportunity for me to integrate what I’ve learned into my daily life. Now, as I step back into what many would call “normal” life, I realize the importance of carrying these teachings with me into a world where routine is not prescribed, and personal growth becomes an intimate, self-directed journey.
To truly appreciate this phase of my journey, I must first reminisce about the immersive experience I had during the 200-hour teacher training course at the Mystic Yoga Farm. Nestled on the enchanting shores of the sacred Lake Atitlán, this unique community is often described as a free-thinking hippie haven, pulsating with positive energy and a deep connection to nature. Over the course of those remarkable 21 days, I was surrounded by a kaleidoscope of experiences and insights, all made possible by three passionate instructors, each with their own unique strengths and philosophies regarding yoga practice. The diverse perspectives and profound love they exuded enriched my training, providing me with invaluable wisdom that I will carry forward in my own practice and teaching.
Each day began with a commitment to ourselves and our practice – spending two and a half hours engaged in meditation, pranayama, and asana. These early morning sessions were a sacred space, and the varying structures we explored held countless revelations. I came to understand my body more intimately, recognizing the unique rhythms of my breath and thoughts. Each sequence evoked different emotional and physical responses, and through this experimentation, I discovered not only my strengths but also my areas for growth. This exploration was not just a physical exercise; it was a journey inward that deepened my understanding of yoga as a holistic practice.
After such a profound morning routine, the next highlight of my day was undoubtedly breakfast. The vibrant display of fruits, particularly the sweet, tropical papaya, along with wholesome oatmeal and fresh eggs, nourished my body and soul. Each meal was prepared with care, providing a grounding element that fortified our spirits for the intensity of our day ahead.
Once we allowed ourselves a moment of digesting both food and experiences, it was time to delve into the wealth of knowledge that awaited us in our classes. With topics ranging from human anatomy to the philosophical underpinnings of yoga, each session was a treasure trove of essential insights crucial for becoming a well-rounded yoga instructor. Our teachers, with their rich backgrounds, shared fascinating tales of their journeys in India and insights on alignment, creating a vibrant tapestry of learning that was both engaging and enlightening.
Following the structured classes, we were granted a two-hour respite, which quickly became some of my favorite moments on the Mystic Yoga Farm. This window of free time was an invitation to recharge and reconnect with myself and others. Whether it was playing my Native American flute, soaking in the sun on the dock, or enjoying refreshing dips in the lake, I found solace in the natural beauty surrounding me. These quiet moments of joy fostered a deep connection with fellow students and the wider community as we shared our experiences, dreams, and talents, creating bonds that felt like a home away from home.
As the sun arched across the sky, signaling the next session of our training, we would embark on the vital segment focusing on teaching yoga. This portion was especially transformative, as we began leading our peers through classes. Learning to understand different body types and exploring the art of adjustments provided me with a sense of responsibility and excitement. It was here that I truly grasped the yogic principle of balancing effort and ease; a critical aspect that I am passionate about imparting to future students. The process of instruction was not merely about guiding through poses but about fostering an environment where practitioners could find their unique expression of yoga.
Evenings would culminate in shared meals, where the communal experience of breaking bread became an opportunity for engagement and connection. Conversations at these tables were nothing short of magical, spinning webs of ideas, aspirations, and reflections. The atmosphere buzzed with the warmth of camaraderie, and I often found myself marveling at the diversity of thoughts and dreams expressed. Each story shared left me feeling blessed to be among such like-minded souls, all striving for growth and understanding within this beautiful practice.
As our days drew to a close, we gathered again for a 7 PM class that was laden with a variety of activities. From singing and dancing to the gentle flow of yin yoga, every evening was a celebration of life and spirit. It was during these moments that sacred ceremonies were conducted, which I hold dear to my heart. To share the specifics of these ceremonies might dilute their essence for future participants, as I believe it is essential to approach them with an open heart and mind. What I can say is that these rituals beautifully wove together the traditional practices of yoga with the indigenous customs of the land we were on. They provided a profound sense of spirituality and community, fostering a deeper connection not only to ourselves but also to each other and the universe around us.
These sacred moments were transformative, serving as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of honoring the roots of our practice. They urged us to be present, to embrace our vulnerabilities, and to celebrate our shared humanity. In the midst of chanting, dancing, and reflection, I found solace and joy – reaffirming my commitment to my own practice and to sharing this beautiful journey with others.
As I carry forward the teachings and experiences from the School Yoga Institute, I am filled with gratitude and inspiration. The integration of this training into my life is an ongoing process, one that will evolve and deepen as I continue to practice and teach. I am reminded that yoga is so much more than the physical postures; it is a way of being, a philosophy that invites us to live with intention, compassion, and awareness.
Looking ahead, I embrace this opportunity to share my newfound knowledge with others, guiding them on their own paths of discovery and growth. My yoga journey is just beginning, and I am excited to see how it unfolds, knowing that the essence of what I have learned will always be a part of me. The ripple effects of this experience extend far beyond the 21 days I spent at Mystic Yoga Farm; they will continue to resonate within me and the community I create throughout my journey as a yoga teacher.
In conclusion, my time at School Yoga Institute has been a profound and joyful experience, one that has profoundly shaped my perspective on life and practice. With every breath, I honor this journey and look forward to all the beautiful connections, lessons, and transformations that lie ahead.
