Nikki | Guatemala 200hr YTT Testimonial
Choosing to complete my yoga teacher training at The Yoga Institute at Mystical Yoga Farm on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala was a deeply intentional decision. I did not want a training that felt rushed, performative, or disconnected from real life. I was looking for something immersive, grounding, and transformative. I wanted to step away from my usual routines and distractions and fully commit to the practice, the learning, and the inner work. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this experience would be unlike anything I had done before.
The setting itself shaped the entire journey. Mystical Yoga Farm is humble, remote, and surrounded by nature. Being immersed in this environment required mindfulness in every aspect of daily life. Things that are often automatic, like waste, water usage, and personal hygiene, became intentional choices. Living so closely with the land made me more aware of my impact and responsibility. Yoga extended far beyond the mat and into how I moved through each day. The simplicity of the surroundings encouraged presence, patience, and gratitude in a way that felt natural rather than forced.
The remoteness of the farm created space for a level of disconnection that felt both unfamiliar and deeply needed. Without easy access to the internet, junk food, or constant stimulation, overconsumption slowly faded away. Scrolling, snacking, and unnecessary distractions became difficult enough to lose their appeal. Everything essential was available, and everything that did not serve the experience required effort to obtain. This made it easier to stay committed to the program and to myself. I felt mentally clearer, more focused, and more present than I had in years.
The teachers were the foundation of the training. Their knowledge, passion, and authenticity made learning feel accessible and inspiring. They embodied the fundamental principles of yoga rather than presenting it as something rigid or unattainable. Spending nine hours a day in class could have felt overwhelming, but instead it became a genuine pleasure. The teachers created an environment where curiosity was encouraged and questions were welcomed. Over time, they became life mentors to me. Their guidance extended beyond physical practice and philosophy and into how I approach discipline, compassion, and integrity in my own life.
What made this training especially unique was the way it incorporated meaningful cultural and spiritual experiences. These moments were thoughtfully integrated rather than treated as extras. We had the opportunity to participate in a ceremony led by a local shaman, which was powerful and grounding. It reminded me that yoga exists alongside many ancient traditions rooted in healing, presence, and connection. We also visited a local Guatemalan cacao farm, where we learned directly from the people who cultivate and prepare cacao. Witnessing the process from tree to refinement deepened my respect for slow, intentional work and for honoring the origins of what we consume.
The physical practice itself was both challenging and deeply rewarding. Learning Hatha and Vinyasa flow side by side allowed me to understand the value of balance between structure and fluidity. There was a strong emphasis on alignment and intention, which changed how I relate to movement. Rather than focusing on achieving shapes, we focused on understanding the purpose of each pose and how it supports the body. This approach encouraged patience and curiosity and helped me develop a more sustainable personal practice.
As a future teacher, this focus on alignment and intention was especially meaningful. I learned that teaching yoga is not about performance, complexity, or aesthetics. It is about holding space, offering clarity, and meeting students where they are. Understanding why we practice certain poses made me more confident and responsible in my teaching. It reinforced the importance of accessibility and safety and reminded me that every body is different. This perspective feels essential to the kind of teacher I hope to be.
Emotionally, the experience was just as transformative. Being removed from my normal environment allowed me to listen to myself more honestly. Without constant distraction, emotions surfaced more clearly. Some days felt expansive and joyful, while others were uncomfortable and confronting. The container created by the teachers, the land, and the community made it possible to move through these moments with compassion rather than avoidance. I felt supported, challenged, and held throughout the process.
By the end of the training, I realized that the most valuable thing I gained was not just a certification, but a shift in how I relate to myself and the world. Living simply showed me how little I actually need to feel fulfilled. The teachings reminded me that yoga is not separate from daily life, but something that informs how we move, consume, and connect. Completing my YTT at Mystical Yoga Farm was a return to fundamentals. It stripped away excess and distraction and replaced them with presence, intention, and connection. This experience continues to shape how I practice, teach, and live.
