Ro | Peru 300hr YTT Testimonial
If I’m being completely honest, all attempts to prepare me for the 300hr Ayurveda YTT, at Munoy Sunqo in Peru with Anita Sundaram and Raquel Bueno, did not do me any justice. Returning home of course everyone wants to know about my experience. “How was your experience?” or “How was Peru?” Each time the question is asked I find myself smiling and fraught to come up with an answer; and that is simply because I struggle to put into words how transformational this 300hr YTT was for me personally. I will preface this with the experience is what you put into it and a lot of what you allow it to be. I personally went into this YTT with no expectations and a spirit of openness to receive whatever lessons were meant for me to receive. I deeply believe that it is because I had this attitude that I got so much more than I expected from this training. Now literally, it is your typical YTT. There is a set schedule consisting of asana and lecture with meals scheduled throughout the day set in the beautiful resort of Munoy Sunqo. For first timers to the country, it can be quite the adjustment to the altitude, the air, and the UV and the employees of the resort do all they can to make that adjustment as seamless as possible. It is not uncommon to underestimate the symptoms of altitude sickness so knowing that the resort employees are well versed in the symptoms and the appropriate remedies is a huge god send. From medicinal teas to stomach friendly meals the amazing staff at Munoy Sunqo do all they can to ensure every guest has the best experience they possibly can. This was my first in person YTT, so the entire experience was one of firsts for me. First time being in Peru, being at a dry eco resort, and of course being at an in-person training lead by two amazing yoga teachers! This may not have been a huge deal for anyone else but for me specifically knowing my teachers were women of color who had multiple years of experience between them did a great deal to solidify the feeling of being in the right place at the right time for me. In western society, yoga has always been a luxury for a specific socio-economic class so to see two brown women thriving in a space that often feels unwelcoming was heart soothing in the best ways.
The lineage that Raquel and Anita hail from and the care and passion they exuded in their teachings created a newfound delight that was further reignited as each day passed. Having stepped out of teaching for 2.5 years, I was extremely nervous about if I made the right decision taking this yoga teacher training. I think I expected a continuation of my 200-hour training, focusing on poses and structuring sequences. However, in this 300 hr training we spent more time learning and focusing on subtle anatomy, taking a deeper dive into learning the Pancamaya system, the vayus, and the importance of prana. Things that, if I’m being honest, I don’t remember covering in detail in my 200 hr training. Another thing I deeply appreciated was Raquel’s natural ability to find joy and humor in the trainings. The information we learned was a whole lot and she had an uncanny way of weaving humor and joy into the lessons that made it even more enjoyable to participate in. There were many days where I would linger after class just to take additional moments to chat with the teachers about the lessons learned that day or in previous days. By the end of the training, I would find myself thinking to myself how if I could be a smidgeon like Anita and Raquel as a yoga teacher, then I would have been the best teacher I could be and I believe that is the highest praise a student could give a teacher. SYI has a wonderful gem in the teaching duo that Anita and Raquel make. Their teaching styles vary but they blend together so beautifully and so seamlessly that I found myself almost begging to be a mentee, support staff, assistant, or of service in any way that would allow me to continue my learning under their tutelage. If you ask me if this 300hr YTT in Peru was worth it, I will say without hesitation that it most certainly was in my book. Because the value that I received was more than just yoga training, more than ayurveda training, I learned more about the type of yoga teacher I want to be and was able to see living examples of what it looks like to be that type of teacher.
