Maddy | Peru 200hr YTT Testimonial
I came to Peru searching—perhaps not for answers, but for a deeper connection to my breath, my body, and the unseen rhythms of life. What I found was a transformative, mystical, and grounding experience that far surpassed my expectations. My time with the School Yoga Institute, nestled in the sacred mountains of Peru, was not only an immersion into the teachings of yoga—it was a sacred ceremony of remembrance, a return to something ancient and true.
The curriculum, interwoven with Andean shamanic wisdom and yoga philosophy, guided us through the four directions and the Mystical Cycle of the Four Winds: Serpent, Jaguar, Hummingbird, and Eagle. Each archetype held a mirror to my soul, revealing both shadow and light, and teaching me to walk more consciously on this Earth.
Serpent – Shedding the Old
We began with Serpent, symbol of the South—teacher of shedding, grounding, and presence. This phase called me to release the old stories and skins I had outgrown. The daily asana practice and spiritual lessons became portals through which I let go of perfectionism, fear, and self-doubt. The serpent whispered, “Come close to the Earth. Feel her. Trust her. Let go.”
There was something deeply humbling about lying on my mat during Savasana, tears rolling into the Earth beneath me, realizing I no longer had to carry everything I once did. The serpent reminded me that yoga isn’t about becoming something new—it’s about remembering who I already am beneath the layers I’ve been taught to wear.
Jaguar – Facing the Shadow
As we moved into the West and met Jaguar, the energy shifted. Jaguar is the archetype of courage—of walking through the shadows with integrity, and of sitting with discomfort without needing to escape it. This phase of the journey invited me to go inward, to listen closely, and to face what I often avoid.
The cacao ceremony during this time became a profound turning point. With warm cups in hand and hearts wide open, we gathered in ritual. Cacao softened my defenses and opened me to vulnerability in a way that felt both ancient and intimate. As I sat in circle, I felt my heart beating in rhythm with the others, a quiet bravery pulsing through the space. Tears came—not just mine—but a collective release, as though Jaguar itself prowled through our circle, burning through illusion and inviting us to be seen.
In one practice, my legs trembled in Warrior II. Not just from physical effort, but from the emotional intensity rising within. And still, I stayed. I breathed. I softened. The fierce grace of Jaguar whispered, “Feel it all. You are strong enough.”
This archetype helped me move through fear, to trust the fire of transformation, and to emerge clearer and more whole. It reminded me that holding space for myself—especially in moments of uncertainty—is one of the most powerful forms of love.
Hummingbird – Trusting the Journey
Then came the lightness of Hummingbird, guide of the North, bringer of joy and sweetness. After the intensity of the West, I welcomed this shift. Hummingbird reminded me that I didn’t need to understand everything—I could simply trust the mystery.
We gathered for gift shares, for songs, and spontaneous laughter. I felt the sacredness in small moments: sipping tea at dawn, singing with my fellow trainees, or watching the clouds drift over the mountains after savasana. I came back to the heart. I let joy be enough.
Hummingbird taught me to follow what feels nourishing and expansive. To sip from the nectar of life without guilt. To trust my inner compass, even if I don’t yet know the destination.
Eagle – Seeing from Above
In the final stage, we entered the East, realm of Eagle—vision, clarity, and higher purpose. By now, something had shifted in me. I felt lighter, more open, more connected. From Eagle’s perspective, I could see how far I had come, how much I had released, and how much beauty there was still ahead.
Our incredible teachers—embodiments of wisdom, compassion, and grace—held us as we learned to teach and to fly. They reminded me that yoga is not something we do, but something we live. Their presence was a gift—each teacher brought a unique medicine that shaped my path and opened my heart. I am eternally grateful.
And the sacred land of Peru, with its mountains, rivers, and whispering winds, was the teacher beneath all teachers. It pulsed with wisdom. It held me in the way only nature can. It asked me to slow down, to listen deeply, and to remember that I, too, am part of the earth’s song.
A Poem for the Journey
In the belly of the mountain, I remembered my name
Not the one spoken, but the one sung by rivers
I shed my skin beside the serpent
Faced the flame with Jaguar eyes
Drank sweetness from the wings of Hummingbird
And soared on the breath of Eagle skies
I touched silence and it touched me back
Om echoing in the bones of the Earth
I am not just becoming—I am returning
To the breath, to the body, to the birth
Closing Reflections
This training was not just about becoming a yoga teacher—it was about becoming more fully myself. I walk away with tools, yes: sequences, cues, anatomy knowledge, philosophy. But more than that, I leave with deep presence, open-hearted awareness, and reverence for the sacred in all things.
I am grateful beyond words for the community of like-minded souls who held space beside me. We laughed, cried, healed, and grew together. We witnessed one another in our rawest and realest forms. That kind of connection is rare—and sacred.
To our teachers, thank you for walking the path so we could begin to see ours.
To Peru, thank you for your mountains, your stillness, your spirit.
To this practice, thank you for guiding me home.
This is not an ending—it is a beginning. And as I step into the world beyond this training, I carry the wisdom of the serpent, the courage of the jaguar, the joy of the hummingbird, and the vision of the eagle within me.
