HOW WE CHOOSE OUR sacred LOCATIONS

As an organization, we are very selective about the locations we choose to host our Yoga Teacher Training courses. We believe that the environment in which you learn has the potential to enhance your overall experience. Bali is known as the heart-chakra of the world and is one of our favorite locations to guide transformative YTTs.

We always make an effort to collaborate with retreat centers who take a more eco-friendly approach by offering local and organic food and by eliminating as much waste as possible. We are currently working with three significantly different but equally amazing retreat centers in Bali that are located in varying regions of the island.

"KEEP SOME ROOM IN YOUR HEART FOR THE UNIMAGINABLE."

BALI STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

WHY CHOOSE BALI FOR YOUR YOGA TEACHER TRAINING

Bali is an indonesian island, located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Bali is known worldwide for its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant tourist industry. With its lush tropical forests, pristine beaches, and towering volcanoes, Bali is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Bali’s cultural heritage is also a major draw for visitors, with a long history of traditional art and dance. Visitors can witness traditional dances, such as the Legong and Barong dances, and can explore the many intricately decorated temples and shrines scattered throughout Bali. The island’s capital, Denpasar, is home to the Bali Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into the island’s cultural and historical background.

Bali is famous as a mecca for yoga enthusiasts from all over the world. The peaceful atmosphere of the island, combined with its spiritual heritage and stunning natural beauty, has made Bali an ideal destination for those seeking to deepen their yoga practice.

There are several reasons why Bali has become famous for yoga. Firstly, Bali is known for its rich cultural heritage, with a long history of spiritual practices, including yoga. The island has a deep respect for spiritual traditions and a strong connection to nature, which creates a unique atmosphere of peace and tranquility. This spiritual atmosphere is perfect for yoga practitioners who are seeking a deeper connection to their practice and learn more about yoga philosophy.

Bali's tropical climate also makes it a popular destination for yoga enthusiasts. With its warm and sunny weather, beautiful beaches and lush jungles, Bali provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor yoga practices. Our Sacred Locations offer beachfront and jungle views, allowing our students to experience the beauty of the island while enhancing their physical and spiritual practice.

Doing a Yoga Teacher Training in Bali offers individuals the opportunity to deepen their practice, connect with like-minded people, and experience the peace and tranquility of the island. Whether one is a beginner or an experienced practitioner, Bali offers something for everyone.

Another factor is Bali’s close proximity to other popular Southeast Asian destinations, such as Thailand and Vietnam. This makes it easy for travelers to combine their yoga teacher training course or yoga retreats with a broader travel itinerary, allowing them to explore the region and experience different cultures.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR Yoga Teacher TraininG IN BALI

CEREMONY & CULTURE

In Bali, we celebrate life, culture, and community. Bali is the only Hindu island in Indonesia and Bhakti Yoga (the Yoga of devotion, celebration, prayer & song) is the way of life. Temples devoted to deities adorn the roadsides, and offerings of marigolds, sweet treats, and prayers are laid in daily blessings at doorways.

The people of Bali welcome and honor visitors from around the world graciously sharing their deep connection and way of life with those who wish to delve a little deeper. During our Bali Yoga Teacher Training, we regularly invite local priestesses, dancers, and practitioners of traditional devotional arts to share their ancestral wisdom and ceremony with students.

Dance is another traditional form of devotional expression in Bali. From young ages, girls in Bali gather at temples to perform the traditional devotional dance as an artistic expression of gratitude, bliss, and devotion for the connection of mind, body, and spirit in the incarnation of the human form. These dances often take on the story of devotion to a particular deity in sharing their message.

CONNECTION TO NATURE & SELF

At any one of our Bali locations you’ll be deeply immersed in Bali’s bountiful nature and if you have the time, Bali has some stunning points of natural beauty to visit. Here’s a few of our favorite spots!

Connection to Mother Earth is keenly felt in Bali, and equally so is the honoring of the healing power of water (Ay). One spot famous for tourists and spiritual pilgrimage alike is the Uluwatu Temple, the temple is in fact a series of pagodas and temple structures that embellishes the lower western coastline of Bali.

Across cultures, water has been referred to for cleansing and healing. Water ceremonies have long been held to honor the feminine, yin, and lunar energies of soul cleansing and rebirth. We have found that our Yoga Teacher Training in Bali are an inspirational transformation of soul evolution, all those who join our Bali YTT's are meant to be there and we honor this rebirth of the soul in our own water ceremonies during our training.

Many students are often called to visit Pura Tirta Tawar, to join both tourists and locals in a traditional water cleansing.

  • Watch the sunrise over Mt Batur
  • Experience the bustling markets of Ubud
  • Monkey Forest
  • Waterfalls in the northern regions
  • Surf at Uluwatu’s hidden beaches
  • Visit the relaxed islands off the coast of Bali. The Nusa Islands offer jaw-dropping Jurasic coastline, pristine beaches, and some lesser-known surf spots.

FOOD IN BALI

It’s pretty safe to say at SYI we’re a team of foodies, nourishing our bodies and sustaining a yogi diet is one aspect of our training students particularly enjoy as this training gives them the opportunity to explore a vegan/ vegetarian diet possibly for the first time.

It seems the world is opening up to the understanding of the importance of proper nourishment. All of our Bali locations have a team of dedicated chefs who provide 3 soul-nourishing meals (and snacks!) a day, as much as possible we source local and organic produce and offer a mix of local and international dishes. Most meals are served buffet-style breakfasts including fresh tropical fruits, smoothies, toasts, nut spreads, granola, eggs, vegetables, and rices. The healing drink of Jammu is often offered at trainings as a immune-boosting way to begin the day, a blend of fresh turmeric, ginger, and honey.

The largest meal served at the midpoint of the day some classic offerings of Indonesian cuisine can include Gado Gado, Nasi Goreng, Mi Goreng, Redang curries, and more! We cater to Vegetarian, Vegan, and Gluten-Free diets!

CLIMATE

Bali has a tropical climate meaning it is hot all year round. The rainy season is from November to March, and a relatively dry season from April to October. Showers can occur but rarely last more than an hour or so. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 57°F to 81°F and is rarely above or below either.

WHAT MAKES SYI UNIQUE?

What a potent time in the world to feel the call to become a yoga teacher! The journey begins right here and right now - searching the internet for a unique experience that sparks your destiny’s curiosity. The call to break free from the mundane and step into transformation! You are here for a reason.

There’s no question that we offer experiences that gift students with so much more than just a certification. We receive this question all of the time: “What makes your yoga school unique?” We’ve broken it down into 8 Reasons Why School Yoga Institute is Unique.

MEDICINE WHEEL INTEGRATION & TRANSFORMATIONAL CEREMONIES

Our school is deeply influenced by Peruvian Shamanism and the Native American Medicine Wheel. This is a significant reason why many say that SYI is much more than just a yoga teacher training. We provide students with a spiritually driven course that goes far beyond Asana (the physical postures of yoga). Through shamanic medicine wheel and ceremonies, we connect to the shadows of our past to understand how our patterns shape and feed our current state and perspective. We develop powerful inner tools and rewrite the personal narratives that keep us stuck, giving way to a new perspective and lasting change in our lives.

OUR LONG HISTORY

School Yoga Institute started over 18 years ago and has contributed to hundreds of lives being transformed along the way! As a spiritually focused organization, we are built upon a foundation of love, radical self-acceptance, personal growth, and deep connection. Our Alumni family is vast and continues to blossom throughout the world. Once you complete an SYI course, you’re family for life! We feel honored to do this work and continue to be inspired by each student and the uniqueness of their story.

OUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

We recognize that yoga should be accessible to every body! Wherever there is inequality, there is work to do. We offer yoga scholarships for all of our yog a teacher training programs and SYI is committed to amplifying and empowering the voices of people of color and folks who identify as BIPOC, LBGTQIA+, and members of marginalized communities.

“We want your voices in our community. We want your radiance in our soul family. We are ready to welcome you just as you are.” - Brooke, Visionary Team

HALF OFF FOR LOCATION CITIZENS

As an organization, we are very selective about the sacred locations we choose to host our YTTs. We are grateful and humbled to hold these courses around the world on many different continents. We want the people who have grown up in these communities to have a chance to experience our programs at a discounted rate, so we offer 50% off for anyone who is from each location. For example, if you are from Central America, you have access to our programs in Guatemala and Costa Rica at a 50% tuition discount!

DIVERSE AND WORLD CLASS FACILITATORS

We truly can’t say enough about our incredible yoga facilitators. Like our course offerings, our facilitators are located all around the globe! Each one of our diverse world-class facilitators has completed a 300hr YTT and offers a plethora of experience and wisdom. We wouldn’t be who we are without them!

We offer continuing education courses both in-person and online! Our programs include Yin Yoga, Trauma-Informed Yoga, and Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga. We offer these courses in Portugal, Panama, Spain, and more! We are all students at heart and it’s important that we continue to learn and grow with one another!

OUR VISIONARY TEAM

What can we say! We love our team and we love what we do! If you have ever sent us an e-mail, requested a phone call, or reached out with questions, chances are you’ve heard back from our co-owner and operator, Keri Pennell!

Keri, and Co-Owner and facilitator Jed Pennell, pour their hearts and souls into this community and deeply care for each student’s journey and experiences. We call Keri our Mystical Mama! A vegan chef, wife, and mother of four, Keri’s leadership is contagious and welcoming! She’s joined by an incredibly supportive team of SYI visionaries!

SUSTAINABILITY

At School Yoga Institute we are grateful to work with numerous international locations as passionate about sustainability as us. In our travels we make an effort to off-set emissions, during our yoga teacher training we provide students with the knowledge, means and opportunity to delve into self inquiry of the impact of their current lifestyle and an introduction to living more sustainably. Click here and read more about Sustainable Living.

SENSE OF COMMUNITY

Everyone is wholeheartedly accepted and encouraged. We create and hold space where participants feel safe and comfortable. We support the growth and expansion of people’s horizons — physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and energetically. As a group, a community, a tribe, and an extended family, we practice and learn to let go. We allow the world to unfold before us without reaction or judgment.

Our intention is to guide aspirants through their own healing journey in order to better prepare them for healing others, letting go of anything that holds them back from what their hearts are truly called to do. Together we unveil the true essence and sweet nectar of life.

We plant one tree every time a student graduates!

One Tree Planted - Reforestation Partner Logo

With the world's largest rainforest ecosystem, the Amazon Rainforest spans 9 countries and is home to iconic species like the Jaguar, Macaw, Amazon River Dolphin, Black Spider Monkey, and Poison Dart Frog. By holding an estimated 90-140 billion metric tons of carbon, its forests play a critical role in the fight against climate change. Unfortunately, due to logging, unsustainable agriculture, and forest fires, it's also a high risk zone for deforestation and degradation.

School Yoga Institute commits to donating one tree for every YTT graduate!
